Weltschale 2006 - Deutschland

The world comes to a halt for one month. All other sports, move over, for here comes the most beautiful game in the planet. Not that football has receded in importance all this while. World Cup means business, serious business. My brother stopped his business for one month during the last World Cup. There is no reason why this year should be any different. He says the fever started in S.Africa quite a while back. As for me, i don't have to stop working as i'm pretty jobless@work or workless@job in any case. Over the last 4 World Cups, i've had a generous share of heart breaking disappointments. I don't know if i've progressed from the stage of 'ripping-pillows-apart' because Argentina or Italy lost, and if so, to what extent*. At least, i hope justice prevails this time, unlike in 2002 when God was a South Korean, and the referee was His messiah.

I've always been a die hard fan of the Azzuri, the Italian team from 1990 [that's when i started watching serious football]. After all, they are not a free-flowing style team. They are traditionally known as the team with a rock solid defence. They are a team/country where the names of Franco Baresi and Paolo Maldini [my evergreen favorite] are equally, if not more popular than say Roberto Baggio or Alessandro Del Piero. There is something to my unflinching support to team in blue which eludes rational justification. Ironically they always seem to get into the toughest of groups and end up playing top teams right in the second round. This year it is as bad as it can get. At best, they will face France in the quarters, or at worst, will face Brazil in the second round!
Del Piero has always underperformed in World Cups. Hope he breaks the jinx this time around.

As [bad]luck would have it, my next favorite team Argentina don't have it easy either. To start with, they are paired with Holland, a team i would love to see doing well. In the second round, either of them will meet Portugal, another team i like! Pappom...

Most hotels have made arrangements to have giant screens and the works for one month. Matchpoint or Fort St.George @ Taj Coramandel would be good choices, next of course to home sweet home.

Likely winner? Unfortunately, Brazil look unstoppable at the moment. What a lineup, what technique, what skill! At least i hope Ronaldo outplays Ronaldinho, if at all he gets fit and manages to stay away from injuries. [Blisters ellam remba over]

As Kounder says in "Suryan", Start Meesic!!

* - 1990 final, Argentina vs West Germany. Of course God Maradona was there but was invisible. We recorded the match and derived a sado-masochistic pain/pleasure in watching that Andreas Brehme penalty over and over again
- 1994 Maradona makes a far from gracious exit and in the final Italy vs Brazil, the heart breaking miss by Baggio

  • Followed soccer till 1990 and then dropped it. The Azzuri were on the rampage in 1982. Check this link, you might find highlights of the 82 QF between Brazil-Italy, one of the alltime greatest games.

  • My only tryst with football was in a inter-house match in school. I succesfully tripped the star striker of the school team.He was on all fours, scarcely able to digest the fact that I managed to get into a football field.I was promptly led off...for good.

So for my philistine tastes, as long as we have a Torsten Frings every now and then, I would be happy even if Ivory Coast wins it.

  • Bala,
Variety of reasons...ever since cable television came in, we find that our makkal are crazy about soccer/formula one and other humongous shit without sparing a thought for the decline in sports (like TT, badminton, hockey, tennis ..) that our country used to do well in. Will blog on it soon. I did follow the Kalyani Black Label Indian football league in 97-99, first time indian soccer got sponsorship....

LOL@ 'Arulmigu Aalavandhaar Thunai' - are you planning to buy a lorry? :-)

Spot on about the Italians. They are the only un-European European team - at least during the Baggio, Schillaci peak they were the most debonair lot. I was watching the 98 cup on TV with my cousin and both of us were struck by how the whole Italian team looked like a bunch of Philmu stars. Who can forget that solo Baggio run to score that goal ? He could even make the South Americans look ordinary at times.

  • Mythreyee,
    Welcome :)
Glad to know that a woman cares to look beyond Beckham's hairstyles and even calls them boring!
Don't miss the big game tonight!
Italia vs Ghana - 12:20 IST

    ttm,
The real football fan would have been hooked to the game even before the advent of cable TV and among youngsters [hey have i really grown that old?], you can easily discern the football lover from the dude with the Beckham hairstyle and Ronaldinho jersey.

"without sparing a thought for the decline in sports (like TT, badminton, hockey, tennis ..) that our country used to do well in"
    1) To me, loving a sport has nothing to do with "my country, my sport" as long as you are passionate about the sport.
    2) Used to play and follow almost all mainstream games in school but my passion for football has outlived the rest....
BTW, Indian hockey is in pathetic shape now.
    3) I HATE F1 RACING. Its an elitist, arrogant, wasteful "activity" which i wouldn't even call a sport. Surely a byproduct of the cable television thing. What's the fucking big deal in watching a bunch of super fast cars going around in circles [or whatever]??

    LORRY-a??? [Vivek style]! Forumhub-la paathutteengala??? :)

    bnb,
Baggio nu sonnale enakku 1994 final penalty kick miss dhaan nyabagam varudhu. Took a LONG time to recover from that, really. Italy-kum Czechs kum yerkanave aagadhu.... now they r in the same group.... pappom..
    Don't miss Italia's opener tonight!

  • Bala,
I agree with your point 1. Also I cant dictate what others want to follow. My only grouse is against the stepmotherly treatment given to some sports in India.

To understand this, you have to work abroad while the Olympics are taking place - Indians become very inconspicuous during those 2 weeks. The worst part is when a Chinese or Taiwanese guy(who pronounces Rick as Lick!) talks as if India is still a land of cows and beggars and wonders why Desis cant go back and 'develop' the country.
