Under the sun

A lot of people have been saying that the climax/rape scene is unrealistic/unnecessary/vulgar - I say please stop what you are doing and go watch it again.
[My wife broke down and i could hear some sobs from other women as well. Not many can handle the climax]
idhu dhAn rape. 'tha indha reaction-a evoke pannanum. A tad lengthy, but jolts the life out of you. Hats off to Ameer for that scene. He has shown tremendous courage (you need balls to show a scene like that). Thamizh directors are growing up, its time for the audience to grow up and wake up as well

In the interval i was wondering if our people had gone overboard and overrated what seemed to be a 'decent' attempt at good film-making. Ameer second half la padatha thookki niruthittaaru. I think Ameer must have loved Virumaandi - the feel is there and some cues have been taken as well.
Dialogues, locale, cinematography, attention for detail, are noteworthy. Saravanan is a revelation. Yuvan kalakkittAru, though none of the songs has stuck in my mind. pAdAma irundhirukkalAm.
Its a remarkable debut for Karthi. However, its ironic that he is so much like Surya, it will be a challenge for him to stand apart. Not that he copies Surya but he just happens to sound and look like Surya! avar thappu illai

Cribs: Not a childhood-sweetheart "love" flashback again!!! pOdhum!
The humor/comedy has come in the way of the the otherwise natural portrayal. Overboard in a few places. I don't find Priya Mani's acting as good as many have posted here. Not only is her accent unconvincing, her body language doesn't look like that of a village girl.

Aandavar banner is another big bonus

P.S: Has anyone watched "Twenty Nine Palms" (French)?

  • Glad that Ameer has proven himself again! But after reading your post, I guess, I need to gather extra courage to watch the movie.

    Aandavar banner??

Ippo Priya Mani pathi naangalum adhe dhaan solrom - acting ellam thevai illai...summ vandhu ninnale...okay, ninnale podhadhu but I think you will get the drift ;-)

  • Dude talking of rape .... One of the most authentic rape movies you ll ever get is - " I Spit On Your Grave" by Zeir Marchi. Have you seen it?

  • Aparna,
I thought Mounam Pesiyadhe was bad and Ram was overrated...

oru pAttOda backdrop-la Kamal Haasan Narpani Iyakkam banner varum, right throughout the song...

  • Nice Review...I havent seen this movie yet..

Heard that producer of this film agreed to cut the rape scene based on the initial review from the audiences.

  • Yet to see the full movie...But in the few scenes I saw I observed some Virumandi influence.......
One of the most brutal rape scenes in movies happens in Ingmar Bergmann's Virgin Spring...
Black and White movie from 1940's...but the effect is stunning......Leaves one absolutely silent.

  • balar,
The scene has been "trimmed" in TN. That speaks volumes about our great audience. The producers don't have a choice

Yes, the influence is there. Technically the film is very good. There is a night shot in the movie towards the end, not sure if its was a "day for night". Very well shot...

Virgin Springs - Yes, at that time it created a furore in Sweden.

  • Made a quick weekend trip to Chennai - all theatres are running full - I tried to watch this movie in Sathyam - housefull, tried Ganapathy Ram in Adyar - full again. Damn.

About Raam - I think he could have salvaged the movie had he not cast that Gult producer's son - pretty sure that some back scratching must have gone on.

The rape scene in Hey Ram was very effective.

BTW, where did you hear woman crying in the audience? Can't be Sathyam ;-)

There is this friend of mine who's been trying hard for a long time to locate Priya Mani's house in Bengalooru :-D

  • Been away from recent tamil cinema for a while..wonder why 2006 had quite a bit of crap even though good number of individual talents have emerged.
Lets try and keep Padmapriya within Kollywood, btw :)

  • ttm,
Yes, only Pudhuppettai and Pattiyal stood out in 2006...

    Tough luck!

R.B Chaudhry Golti-a?? Settu nu nenachen...
That scene in Hey Ram - chance e illa.. level-e vera...

I watched the film here in Singapore :)

    P.S: Priya Mani Bengalura?????

By Blogger Bala (Karthik), at Mon Mar 05, 06:52:00 AM

  • ttm:
You mean Priya Mani ? She acted in Balu Mahendra's Adhu Oru Kanaa Kaalam, which I think you reviewed.

IIRC, they are Tamilians settled in Bengalooru.

Lots of Gults have Chaudhary surname. Now that you ask, I am getting confused. Maybe avanga, avanga payyan type scenario ? ;-)

Singapore-la ladies azhugaraangala, ahaa anga ellam bugger-shugger type-nnu nenaichen.

appo Aandavar & Ameer combo expect pannalaama?

By Anonymous RK, at Mon Mar 05, 11:23:00 AM

  • BNB,
    Shammikkanum, IIRC-na enna??

Enakku pakkathula irundha oruthar (aan), avar thembala maraikka coke-a eduthu kudikka arambichuttaaru! :)

"appo Aandavar & Ameer combo expect pannalaama?"
After Dasa, Aandavar is doing a film with Saran. Adhukkaparam, an NRI producer wants to do a big budget venture with Saar. Salary is said to be 11Cr. Gautham, Ameer, Murugadoss(!) are some names being considered...

By Blogger Bala (Karthik), at Mon Mar 05, 11:33:00 AM

  • Bala,
Sorry. IIRC - 'If I recall Correctly'. Adhavadhu, IIRC Priya Mani Kudumbathar bengalooril settle aanavargal endru solla vandhen.

  • Bala,bnb

haiyyo, haiyyo...I'm referring to Padmapriya the MBA girl from GE who rocked in Thavamai Thavamirundhu and is now set to become #1 in Kerala...a rare tamil find after Suha and Reva but looks like she will be lost to other states :(

By Anonymous ttm, at Mon Mar 05, 10:33:00 PM

  • BNB,
    Thanks! :)

I know you were referring to "GE" Padmapriya :)

By Blogger Bala (Karthik), at Tue Mar 06, 07:51:00 AM

  • Saran film appo confirmed-a :(

Big budget film by NRI producer- ok but why salary 11 cr?I feel paying such huge salaries to anyone before the release of the movie is not the right way of doing things.A share in the profits is a better way.

By Anonymous Cinefan, at Mon Mar 12, 01:32:00 PM

  • The Movie started kewl.. with a song.. not bad flash backs..

but after 70% of completion.. it seems Ameer felt he wanted the worst ever violence seens in his movie. And that spoiled the movie.

All i remember after watching the movie is the gang rape and that was nt necessary for the movie.
