Oh Brother! Where art thou?

Listened to Sillunu Oru Kaadhal a few days back. JUNK. CRAP. NOISE. The phrase "blank noise project" came to mind.
Has ARR moved beyond the 'lowly' confines of TFM? Has he lost his roots completely? Can't we hear a thamizh song which doesn't have anything to do with Sufi or Qawwali music?
Can we have tunes and notes which can hold and carry Thamizh words? Can we hear Thamizh words as they are?
After SOK, i listeed to Godfather just hoping that SOK would be an abberation. GF was slightly better but the pattern was evident.

ARR, enna aachu?? Mayiliragai madhiri oru paattu venum.....

  • Your post is I think one of its kind. The rest of blogosphere seems to be going ga-ga over it.

I have not listened to it nor Godfather BTW.

It seems that ARR is doing more quality work in Hindi now than Tamil.

  • Cant expect any fair writing when someone links to Ilayaraja fan club. you must be feeling relieved after venting your anger out. Ghost of 1992 still hurts many hahahaha.

Which is why i was eager to listen to it in the first place...

It seems that ARR is doing more quality work in Hindi now than Tamil.
    Exactly!

    Anon,
Who asked you to expect fair writing here? :) That's your problem....
And it looks like you are the one who's venting out anger and all:p Yen tension agareenga?
    You better listen to

Looks like there are few independent thinkers still left in the blogosphere - Congrats .

Experimentationaaam, off-beataam, ketka-ketka it will grow on you-vaam. Guys stop cheating yourselves !

  • if you want tunes and notes which can hold and carry Thamizh words please consult Old black and white movies and miscelleanous Ilayan's songs fit to be played on the beach platform by jobless music directors with a harmonium petti.

Machakari, Munbe Vaa, Maaja(A dash of SPBC's Telugu flavor), New York Nagaram, Kummi Adi are all in near pure Tamil. The title song is meant to be a retro jazz track and the accent/pronounciation are intentional.
But if you're such a tamizh kirukkan, I dare you to decipher the lyrics of the Maaricham song in Sillunu Oru Kaadhal. I bet you don't even know how to pronounce any of the words, let alone its meaning. Go ahead, its in pure tamizh, unless you consider songs like vaazha meenu to be pure tamil.

    Uyire-Nenjinilae- Are the beats Tamil?
Thenmerku Paruva Katru - Are the beats Indian?
Thiruda Thiruda - Putham Pudhu Bhoomi Vendum - ??

    Its just good music, asshole.

So whats wrong with Sufi or Qawwali?
The rustic Porale Ponnuthaayi from a Bharathiraja film won the National Award. It is based on Sufi rhythms. Could you tell the difference, you moron ? I didn't think so.

Mayiliragai madhiri oru paattu venum..... Mayiru. Does Sadhna Sargam pronounce Tamil words as they are?? Mayilirahaai....
And you think GodFather is better than SOK? No comments!

Dear Bala(Karthik), what you've just posted are some of the most insanely idiotic statements ever seen on a blog. Trying to be different eh? At no point in your incoherent rant were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought.

Bala, you're just a stuck up bitch with very limited music tastes.

    Puke.

  • I havent listened to it yet.but as usual ARR is overhyped.

By Blogger ., at Tue Aug 22, 05:40:00 PM

  • soonapaana like his "AANDAVAR" is a pretentious idiot..btw himesh becomes the ELEVENTH reason not to watch dasavatharam..

  • Maran,
Everyone has a right to form their opinion. Its silly and stupid to personally attack someone just because you dont agree with his views.

I found Sillunu oru kaadhal amazing. I liked all the songs, and feel New York Nagaram is one of the best songs of ARR. At the same time, if I expect everyone to have same opinion it is childish.

And for your kind information, mayilirage was sung by Madhushree and not Sadhana Sargam :)

By Anonymous Anonymous, at Wed Aug 23, 02:11:00 AM

  • yes agree.. jok might not be very good.. but one must also accept that it has been long time an illayaraja album was worth listening.

By Blogger Ravi, at Wed Aug 23, 06:12:00 AM

  • its ARR who said that new york nagarm would be the National Anthem of Youth. He deserves to say such statement, and as a listener, our sonapaana has the right to say that its NOT that good.

i liked SOK but it is surely experimental. i dunno waht forces rehmannto go to experimental mode, in thes days??? he could have given some fresh tunes like musthafaa musthafaa ect.

    anon,
i have know only one reason why u would not se dasaavathaaram - it would be a complex movie for dummies like you

By Blogger tekvijay, at Wed Aug 23, 05:11:00 PM

  • The title song is the worst with lyrics that cannot be understood..its extremely irritating to listen to the album especially after having grown upto raja's numbers...what say bala?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at Thu Aug 24, 05:03:00 PM

  • And in response to the anonymous' comments, well said!!

Albert-la naanga kalakkunadhu indiaglitz and behindwoods la ellam vandirukku paatheengala?
These anonymous sons of anonymous fathers and morons have asumed that i don't like ARR's music which is far from the truth. Its just that his treatement of music in Thamizh films of late has been a disappointment to me personally.

    Dei Moron,
Yaaru oi nee? Umakku enna thagudhi irukku oi?
Jazz pathi enna mayira theriyum unakku? Neeyum ARR-um enna jazz-ku patent vechirukkeengala? Dei kenathu thavala, i can name atleast one jazz-based song of ARR which is not only better than SOK song but also has decipherable Thamizh. Unnaya madhiri sumba kudhi ellam karuthu solradha vida people like Guitar Prasanna have a better say and right to offer their opinions. Check out what he has to say about the MD you love to hate. Otha engalukkum theriyum da jazz, ragtime, bebop ellam... otha soothu kilinju BBCC dhaan unakku... Odippoiru!

    Karthi/SS/Thilak/MB,

Well, you didn't like SoK. Point taken.

What's this fuss about tamizh tunes? All songs are in tamizh only right? You don't like the style in which it is composed is it? You feel A R Rahman is westernizing 'tamizh' music?

You liked "Mayiliragai". Somebody didn't. It keeps happening. A R Rahman cannot compose songs to appease 100% of his listeners.

Reg your reply to Maran's comment:
Bad language could have been avoided. Still your point could be conveyed.

    bnb:
Just because Bala is criticizing A R Rahman doesn't mean he has the ability to think independently. Everyone thinks independently. Sometimes you find that more people's thoughts are more aligned than yours.

    silicon sillu
AFAIK, A R Rahman wouldn't have said that ever about his music. But if you can prove something with authentic proof, then we can discuss. Otherwise that is simply a waste of a comment!

Your language shows your true self! :)

  • Mr.Adi,
    Neenga enna nattamaiya??
    Panchayat ellam neraya pannuveengalo?
The very fact that you have nothing to say about mOrOn and anons shows YOUR TRUE SELF! :)

    "ARR is westernizing Thamizh music?"
Boss, westernization ellam MSV kaalathlendhe irukku, ARR was certainly not the first/only one to do it. That is not my grouse.

I didn't like SOK because i found it too loud and as usual ARR makes sure that the Thamizh pronunciation goes for a toss.

Munbe Va - I loved the prelude and the pallavi. It just gets lost from thereon IMO.

Newyork Nagaram - This one starts great as well. IMO, too many instruments spoil the broth. It didnt sound like a song sung in longing for a loved one. And about the rendering of the lyrics by ARR, the less said the better.

JOK - I know its jazz and all. No lessons on that please. Again this is not the first time jazz has been used in TFM and please don't tell me that just because its jazz the Thamizh has to be murdered!

Bottom Line: Oru non-film album na eppadi venumnaalum music pottukkalam. Creative license and freedom. However, when it is for films, i would expect the music/song to match the situation, milieu and locale. Thats my point. Adhu jazz, rock, rock n roll, blues, WCM, carnatic, Hindustani, rap, hip-hop, bhangra, edhu venaalum use pannattum. That is not the issue. Just because these forms are used, it doesnt mean that the song is good, just like the song does NOT become bad because these forms are used. Please shun this notion that ARR is the only one to fuse these elements.

P.S: Your bias has even made you selectively blind to 'bad language'!

By Blogger Bala (Karthik), at Fri Sep 01, 03:42:00 PM

  • Bala.. Now, I'm actually beginning to like "Newyork nagaram".. :)

  • "AFAIK, A R Rahman wouldn't have said that ever about his music. But if you can prove something with authentic proof, then we can discuss. Otherwise that is simply a waste of a comment! "

He said it in a recent vikatan interview. I too share the same feel of bala on SOK, i hope he gets better in shankar\Mani films.

i am also worried he is doing more films for s.j.surya & his likes.....the bad thing is that ARR never puts the effort of a Mani\Shankar film and that album becomes another SOK, what a waste of ARR's time??!!
