Ricky vs Sunny

Gavaskar was a great batsman. Some say he was greater than Sachin [no helmets, quality of bowlers, centuries in West Indies etc]. Ponting is a great batsman too and one who is unfairly touted as the best batsman at present. Be as it may, the fact is both of the aforementioned men are greats in their own right and naturally that entitles them to king-sized egos and digs at rival teams, coaches and captains.
When it comes to commentary, at times i have looked forward to Gavaskar's comments but often, the India supporter in him takes over and he can be extremely irritating whenever this happens. Sometimes it turns out to be funny when he starts 'batting' for India in the commentary box, even when India are chasing 313 and are 68/5. Wish his arrogance in the box rubbed off on the blokes on the field.
He has never been shy of indulging in Aussie-bashing (in addition to England-bashing) and now, Ponting has decided enough was enough and paid Gavaskar back.
I wish Gavaskar responds to this and the fun continues...

"For him to go on about behaviour, not too many captains have
dragged their teams off the field, either," Ponting said. "I don't mind if 'Mr
Perfect' comes out and goes on about our team, I know we are all not perfect. We
are not going to keep everyone happy 100% of the time. But for some of these
guys that have done it all themselves, it's pretty high and mighty for them to
say that"

P.S: I think Ponting has a striking resemblance to George Bush

  • Commentary-wise Gavaskar is vetti for more than a decade. But his comments on sportsmanship is too much:
    -Walkout against Australia
-36* off 174 balls in World Cup

    Idhellaam 3 much!

    Exactly!
BTW, who are your favorites commentators?

By Blogger Bala (Karthik), at Tue Mar 13, 10:22:00 AM

  • My fav commentators are Ravi Shastri and Geoff Boycott, Both have a good sense of humour..Shastri usually gives you the balanced look of things, while Boycott can take care of the outrageous part :)

Saw that you have become a contributor to Thalaivar's unofficial blog, Bravo!

  • i think, ravi shastri and ian chappell are the best commentators in the world.. no doubt abt that.. Arun lal is not far behind.. he is also very sensible, though not very attractive..

  • Bala,
Have to disagree with few things here. whatever sunny said has been almost accepted by Ponting. Then why the hell he went on with Personal attack on sunny and the indian team.

For once I thought as if the aussies have framed every available law in cricket books. Wondering how ICC can dismiss their "sledging" as their natural behaviour.

No one is perfect. Agreed. But sunny is hinting at these things even before the Steve Era. Why this sudden jump then?

For ICC, may be a Kenyan player should teach them how a normal Kenyan behaves and so do the Pakistanis. Each one have their own ways of countering remakes made on them in the field. But they hide their natural behaviour as a mark of respect for the same. best e.g., SACHIN !

The problem is too fold. Aussies don't want to avoid the techique which they used effectively to disturb the mental attitude of the opposition. So, do ICC which had remained as a dumb head when comments were made on this.

Would McGrath or Ponting will be able to digest if a chennai player playing the WC utters "o...tha", "baa**u" etc as a natural response.

Let us bomb sunny and Ponting and the australian attitude !

  • Feddy,
nammala madhiri avarukkum idhu dhaane business :))

    Karthi,
Arunlal????????? He should be included in the L.Sivaramakrishnan list, just above Kris Srikkanth and Mohinder Amarnath...

    ttm,
    No Benaud in your list??

    Selva,
Ponting is no saint and what's more, he's stupid because in his retort to Sunny's comments on sledging and gamesmanship, Ponting is commenting on the performance of the Indian team (and what does Sunny have to do with the team's performance?), which is irrelevant.
However, Gavaskar is no saint either.

Plus, for all the irritation Sunny caused us sitting in the commentary box, its good to see someone dishing it out to him, though for a totally different matter :)

ICC - ICC is like A Tamil Nadu censor board full of eunuchs...

  • Bala,
Agreed. ICC is more or less similar to our Censor Board. (Bored indeed :-)) )

IT is good to see Sunny getting royally f----- by a creature like Ponting. Sunny is just a high profile version of Rameez Raja when it comes to commentary.

I like "Tony Greig". though there is nothing special which u can call in his commentary, he bring the REAL FEEL of the match in his voice.

It is hard to forget the kind of intro he gives for every player. Be it a player from a Kenyan team or a Dutch team.

Apart from that, Geff and Ravi are equally good in putting everything straight ! :-))

I am not sure whether any other senior Australian players have replied on this one?

If that happens, the fun will beunlimited :-)0

  • viji,
    I though Rameez wan't THAT bad :)
Just that i found it extremely annoying when he pronounces pitch as 'pish'.

    Selva,
"It is hard to forget the kind of intro he gives for every player. Be it a player from a Kenyan team or a Dutch team."
    LOL :)
