Who Is Going To Stir

Vijay TV's "KalakkappOradhu yAru" and "King Queen Jack" remind us of the stark difference between good stand-up comedy and crap. It's difficult to decide who is the most irritating - Ramya, Jagan or the 'comedians'. On the other hand, KY Part 3 is so much fun and awesome entertainment. Atleast most of the time. The final was on Friday (the telecast is delayed by a week here) and it was a one man show. Sivakarthikeyan. He was fuckin awesome. He saved his best for the last round. The results have not been announced yet but it can't be anyone else.
I never get bored of mimickry and though he does mimickry in all his rounds, he is fast, innovative and never fails to make us laugh. TR and Captain always receive special treatment from him. His lines border on slander and blasphemy but i'm sure Captain himself will laugh his guts out if he watches him.
In the wild card round, there was this guy who performed this 'gig': how would it sound if different animals made sounds (mating calls) like actors? The best was with Vinu chakravarthy as a cow and K.Bhagyaraj as a goat! Unfortunately, i don't think he qualified for the final.
Apart from the participants, host Sethu, in my opinion is the best mimickry artist around. Check him out doing a V.S Ragavan and you will see why :)

  • this guy sethu rocks

have u watched a round where this lollu sabha jeeva also partcipated(i think they should have asked him to quit as he would be the easy winner and hez a vijay tv guy)...hez jus fuckin awesome

  • Yes, Sethu (I didn't know his name actually) is an excellent mimic! He mimics a lot of old generation actors to the tee. Have you heard him mimicking Shanmugha Sundaram?
Talking of VS Raghavan, I love the way Vivek mimicks him ("Ennatha paeshaen!?") when he responds to him in a scene in "Poovellaam Un Vaasam".

  • sethu's v s raghavan is good no doubt.. but i think king queen jack is honestly trying to break new ground in tamil entertainment.. standup comedy should be about more than mimicry i feel.. that girl is also hot.. jagan does get on the nerves..

  • KQJ is actually a retired-men-employment scheme. I mean YGM? The man hasnt delivered a single witty line worthy of mention in his entire career. Baskee is a oh-so-80's relic. I cant even remember the other guys. Pathetic is a mild word.

KPY is good in parts. I think I am personally saturated with the "if TR/Captain were in this situation , what he would say" type of comedy. Siva Karthikeyan as mentioned was good because he managed to back up his performance with some good lines unlike most of the participants in KPY and Sun's JPY.
Bala, you should see JPY for the ultimate pathetic show. Surprisingly, the same guys had been part of Vijay's KPy and were actually good then.S omehow SUn has screwed up even with this talent base.

Jeeva is pretty good but even lollu sabha is stagnating now.

  • If I'm right Sethu is Shanmuga Sundaram's son. As Bala said, he's one of the best in mimicry along with Jeeva and Siva Karthikeyan.

Asatha Povadhu Yaru (APV) - is the no. 1 pathetic show, no way near to KPY.

S.Ve.Shekher (timing & dialog delivery) and Uma Riaz (mimicry artiste herself) are KPY's strengths. Their smart dig at APY also deserves special mention.

  • King Queen Jack-Which channel?

Have watched KPY on&off.APY is bad-watched it the first week&decided enough is enough.

Don't know if you guys watch 'Comedy Circus'on Sony(Saturdays 9.30pm).has a TV star paired with a Stand up comedian-some of the couples are damn good esp Swapnil Joshi,VIP&Urvashi Dholakia&Shakeel. We laugh our guts out every weekend.

I always thought the South Indian films esp Tamil were way ahead in Comedy compared to Bollywood but on Television it seens the other way round :(

  • Saw KQJ yesterday after reading this post. Someone called Badava Gopi, who called himself a celebrity was the first to come on stage. He said he's quite famous in Russia, Europe. when he reached Moscow airport, quite a few russian girls came behind him and requested him for a snap with them. But the only sore aspect was that he wasnt able to converse with them since they only knew Russian. He made fun of their dialects but when he said those girls recognized him easily, he was quite serious. Is Badava Gopi such a famous indian personality???
    EKSI????

  • I hate tamil stand-up comedies from what I've seen. Henceforth, I should start watching out for Sethu.

By Blogger ., at Wed Jul 25, 09:34:00 PM

  • Vikki,
Yes, i saw that episode :)
I think that was like a guest appearance.

    Zero,
Yes, Sethu as SS was terrific as usual, especially right at the end of the programme when Divya Darshini literally backed off a couple of steps when he went "enn.. ennnnnna ma ipppadi kettitiye!" :)
My favorite line of the actual V.S.R is his gem in Hey Ram "innum 5 segandu dhaan irukku.. correct-a kanichu vechirukken"

    Scudie,
I beg to disagree totally. Agreed that almost all the shows are copies of N.I channel programmes which are in turn copies of American shows but KQJ is all form and no content.

    Raj,
Absolutely agree. Infact i also feel Lollu Sabha has started to get boring, especially with that Swaminathan.

Siva Karthikeyan as mentioned was good because he managed to back up his performance with some good lines unlike most of the participants in KPY and Sun's JPY
Exactly. S.V Sekar generally doesnt laugh no matter how funny the contestants get but even he couldn't control his laughter in the final.
Infact, even Uma Riyaz Khan is terrific when she does a Thenga Srinivasan.

    Vasan,
If I'm right Sethu is Shanmuga Sundaram's son
    unmaya va???

APY - Ultimate crap. Can't stand that Chitti Babu.
Only Madurai Muthu is genuinely funny in that show but even he we was hijacked from KPY.

    Cinefan,
    KQJ is on Vijay TV.

inga Sony subscribe pannala. Hindi channels la only Star Plus.
adhulayum "The Great Indian Laughter Challenge" dhaan varudhu and i didn't find it to be special. Sidhu sirippu dhaan thaanga mudiyadhu.

    Deepak,
naanum nethu dhaan neenga sonna episode paathen.
Yeah, who the fuck is Badava Gopi? He comes as the commentator in Chennai 28 but haven't seen him apart from that. Fuckin irritating...

    Viji,
    yaaru Sangeetha-va?

    Thilak,
India la KPY-3 mudinju pochu. inga final episode indha Friday. Don't miss it if they have reruns. Watch out for Siva Karthikeyan

    VIjay has both KQJ&KPY-3 aa?

'The Great Inidan Laughter Challenge'is like APY-irritating.

But Comedy Circus is good&most of the times intelligent.Sad you don't get to watch Sony TV.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at Sat Jul 28, 10:32:00 AM

  • Bala,

KPY final was awesome and specially Sivakarthikeyan :)) As you said he is innovative and I was watching the finals all alone and when I watch comedy shows/tracks alone I dont laugh loudly. But Siva Karthikeyan made my spine crack :)) As you say he is very innovative.

Captain to Vinu Chakravarthy: Naan 20 varushathukku mEla nadichuttu irukkEn - athunAla nadippa niRuthittu inimE social service paNNalaamnu irukkEn

Vinu : Nee nadippa niRuthuRathE periya social service thAndA :rotfl:

Then he had a dig at Sethu and Divya too. "Divya enakku thangachi mAthiri... pathaRukiraar Seeeeeeeethu... ( in Sun TV "Dinakaran" paper ad style):rotfl:

Sethu is superb !! He and Uma Riaz mimicked Mammootty and Banupriya ones with 'Azhagan' dialogues. That was fantastic. And yes when he mimics VSR - it's kalakkal and his body language too is very funny.

SV Shekar and Uma along with Sethu and Divya make a very good team.
(Great that they got rid of Madan Babu and Chinni Jayanth. Both were really irritating)

It's so amazing to see Uma's timing sense. In the final episode last Friday - her response to the 'quarter' matter was

Jeeva is boring and has limited skills when it comes to mimicing. Body language niRaiya improve paNNanum and yes 'Lollu Sabha' is becoming monotonous now.

Regarding Asatha POvathu Yaaru - it's another crap by SUN TV. And Chitti Babu is annoying.

I have so far not seen KQJ. The clippings shown in the ads were not so impressive therefore didn't bother much.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at Sat Jul 28, 04:39:00 PM

  • I got to agree.. Siva Karthikeyan was so good that I really wanted him to win, and, of course he did. A truly deserved win. And I think King, Queen, Jack could be much, much better.. maybe with different artistes?
I haven't watched and don't intend to watch APY. How dumb can Sun TV be, not only to copy the whole idea apdiye, but also to 'think' up such a name? Those guys can't get innovative even to save their soul. Terrible.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at Sun Jul 29, 02:52:00 PM

  • Bala, thanks. I saw the final episode of KPY3 and thoroughly enjoyed it, especially when they showed Siva Karthikeyan's clippings.
    Chancey Illa!

Gabten and TR have an argument...

Gabten to TR: Dei, un padatha Discovery Channella dhaan da kaatturaanga.

TR to Gapten: Un padatha POGO channella dhaan da poduranga.

    Another one...Vinu Chakkaravarthi to TR:
    Nadikka Varalainna ennava aayiruppe?
    TR: Doctor Aayiruppen.
Vinu: Adhaan Nadikkavey varalaille, appo yen Doctor aavala?

Chumma Kalakkittanga. APY - Aruvai Poduvathu Yaaru'nnu vechirukkalam.

  • Cinefan,
Maybe i should replace Star Plus with Sony

    Roshan,
KQJ ads are better than the show! :)

And yes, Jeeva has his limitations and comfort zones but still he's good.

    Madhu,
    Welcome back!
And KQJ - i'm not sure but i think Jagan is the producer. So, i don't have any hopes of it improving :)

    Deepak,
Trust Sun TV with a 6 lakh prize money!

By Blogger Bala (Karthik), at Mon Jul 30, 10:34:00 PM

  • LOL @ deepak's comment!! And is Sun TV offering 5 lakhs?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at Tue Jul 31, 10:47:00 PM

  • >> Roshan,
KQJ ads are better than the show! :)>>

Thanks for the warning bala :-)

By Anonymous Anonymous, at Tue Jul 31, 11:02:00 PM

  • Typo: The above line to Deepak must read - Trust Sun TV to come up with a 6 lakh prize money contest!

    Madhu,
No, KPY-3's prize money was 5 lakh and it is Sun TV's wont to assert their so-called supremacy in these ways

By Blogger Bala (Karthik), at Wed Aug 01, 12:32:00 PM

  • Oops.. I wanted to type '6 lakhs'.. My bad. neways, guess you guys are right. Sun TV is very capable of trying that.. that's probably the only thing they can beat the Vijay TV guys at!

  • Bala,
By any chance have you seen Super Singer Junior on Vijay?

If so, may I know your views?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at Mon Aug 06, 09:52:00 PM

  • Roshan,
My views on Super Singer - Junior.
    vazhakkam pola points-aave sollidren :)

    Pros:
    1) nalla standard. The kids who got through were good , especially the winner Krishnamurthy
    2) Interesting to watch and nalla timepass
    3) Talented singers-a medaikku kondu varadhu nalla vishayam.

    Cons:
    1) Some of the parents were annoying with their on-camera behaviour, the burden they place on their children
    2) The choice of songs in many rounds enforced by the judges/organizers.
    3) A little girl "dancing" to "Konjam konjam" (Arindhum Ariyaamalum) - If you've seen this you'll know what i mean.
    4) Unless they (parents and everyone else concerned) are careful, they are gonna burn out some real good talent.
    5) The emphasis laid by the judges on things like "expressions", "attitude" and all such bullshit. Come on, they are kids and even for adults, what matters is the singing and almost everything else can be "acquired".

By Blogger Bala (Karthik), at Wed Aug 08, 02:46:00 PM

  • Forgot to add,
Dr.Balamuralikrishna-va judge-a kooptutu kuthu paattu pottu aada sonnanga andha pasangala! :banghead:

By Blogger Bala (Karthik), at Wed Aug 08, 02:47:00 PM

  • Thanks Bala for your views :-)

My pick was Vignesh all through out :-) A great talent in all departments be it folk, melody, western or semi classical. But I was disappointed with his picks in the finals. Vanthaal Mahalakshmi was fine but the other two were dull numbers.

I didnt like the way Krishnamoorthy's parents tried to seek sympathy votes during the on TV segment just before the finals. It was obvious that they were not genuine - specially the father .

I got attracted towards Usha Madam and instantly became her fan. Such a smart, kind and honest personality :-)

    >> 3) A little girl "dancing" to "Konjam konjam" (Arindhum Ariyaamalum) - If you've seen this you'll know what i mean.>>

Agreed ! that was pretty annoying and embarassing too- athuvum in front of Dr. Bala Murali Krishna :banghead:

    >> 4) Unless they (parents and everyone else concerned) are careful, they are gonna burn out some real good talent. >>

Agreed again and in some cases it was visible - specially in the case of that little kid "Bala Sarangan".

    >> The emphasis laid by the judges on things like "expressions", "attitude" and all such bullshit.>>

Ditto ! Specially the "attitude" part. EllA judges-umE (from the initial rounds) solli vechA maathiri were using that word "attitude" quite casually all the time and I felt like asking them "attitude-na ennAnnu ungalukku muthalla theriyumA"

PS: Here in Colombo they have organised a musical show with the 4 finalist and other kids of SSJ on Sunday. But the latest news from a friend in Chennai is that Vignesh and Sai Charan will not be participating as they are in Abaswaram Ramji's troop and they are not permitted to sing for other troops as per the policy :-( So we dropped the idea of going for the program.
