Third Man
Why the heck don't captains have third man in tests? How many boundaries have been conceded in the slip-gully region? How many undeserved and edged 2s and 3s? If required, take out the extra-cover or the square-leg, i say! Match after match. Everyone knows the futility of not having a third man and yet nothing is done. Its like those utterly meaningless Hindu rituals.

u have exactly given ur viewpoint like an armchair pundit ...hehe
when a four is given there after slip miss/ no slip ...and it leads to four..its irritating!
but when our batsmen get that four...its very delightful than the batsman middling it...so happy :D

Bala.you are in elite company....Micheal Holding has the same thing to say every match............A third man would save atleast 50 runs I guess....each innings...
And would bring some sense to the figures of some of the much hyped batsmen of this age.....

Third man is considered redundant in Tests by the bowling side since you generally attack with 3 slips, gully(the short third man) and point around the bat on the offside. If your line and length are good, you wont see the batsman playing the steer or slicing over slips like in ODIs. Should the batsman go for an uppish drive to an overpitched ball, 3 slips/gully/point should be enough to take the catch.
3rd man will come in a defensive setting and by keeping one we minimise the chance of the batter increasing the risk by going for his shots.

Illiye.. Adhu dhaane problem.. Often, the slips/gully aren't enough..
"3rd man will come in a defensive setting and by keeping one we minimise the chance of the batter increasing the risk by going for his shots."
Point to be considered but then that can be offset by leaving the extra-cover region open or removing the square-leg... That will make the batsman go for a cover-drive or make him play across the line.. Also, with a field like that, the bowler shouldn't be bowling on or down the leg... :)
On the contrary, the runs conceded in the region are too many to be ignored...

third man is like a fine leg... it must be in place to save runs... nasser hussain used to have third man and a deep point for indian batsman most of the time to save runs... and that makes sense...
