Rahman's Latest

Sahana is the Munbe Vaa of 07 - Udit N suits this song well, pronunciation notwithstanding. Nice groovy bass lines

Athiradi - For a moment or two, doesn't impress when it starts (MJ's 'Jam') but a very catchy number. Rahman's vocals - 'Athiradi'! Likely to be the 'once more' song in the theater.

Baleilakka - Vintage SPB. Nothing remarkable otherwise but i'm sure it will be a hit

  • Nice quick review . .I felt the MJ beat too but the beat changes throughout the song and its more like Dangerous from MJ's Dangerous then Jam.Anyway I definitely vote for Sahana,Ammbal AmmBal and Oru Kudai !!!

  • it's mediocre compared to ARR's standards.

I think Shankar will paint everything from vehicles, builidings....to people :D and work more on the dance movies :p

    Thilak,

  • Bala,
Chinna doubt. neenga ARR fan ah aayiteengala  !
I listened to this and the first time hearing made me to rate it as "Crap". Except BALLELEKKA (Thanks to SPB) nothing was great.

Lyrics enbathai maranthae poi vittaaraglaa in Athiradee.. I couldn't understand what the song is all about. EKSI !

Athiradee has all the beats that any layman who listens to popular English albums will find out ! and as Shan pointed out MJ's DAngerous influence is so high !

I was relieved with the SPB Intro. that was the only saving grace.

Oru koodai - SAgikala (thanks to Joe) ! ennappa song idu !

Sahana - usual O.K number. reminds all the good old songs :( The same applies to most of the songs. Same 'DEJAVU' Feel. seems HJ had changed shankar thru Anniyan

Repeated listens proves Athiradee wil be a huge hit !

'Randaka Ranadaka' for which shankar painted an entire street happens to be the native village of a friend of mine in Senkottai. His father said:
"Avar paint adikka 500 roobai koduthaar, paint remove panna innoru 500 roobai koduthaar". Mama also added "Shooting podhu andha heroine enga pakkathaathula vandhu pesindu irundhaa - nalla friendly type, ponnu (Sadha)romba latchanamaa irukka(2x)" - I don't remember the echupression on Mami's face :-D

  • Selva,
"neenga ARR fan ah aayiteengala  !"
ahaa.. After Isai Kadavul Ilayaan, Rahman is my favortie Indian MD. Infact, ariyadha vayasula konja naal avar rasigara irundhen :))
    About the album.
Not anywhere near Rahman's best but not crap either, IMO. Style, Vaji Vaji are crap, except 'Sahana' which is of course a good number for sure... It's not meant to be an immortal or timeless album. After all, it's a Shankar film!
'Athiradi' - In all likelihood, i won't be listening to it after a few days/weeks. I find it to be a funky 'fun' song. I've stopped expecting decipherable lyrics in a Rahman album. Talking about lyrics, (Valee????), it's so cheesy that it's fun - "Billa Ranga Baasha dhaan, ivan pistol pesum besha dhaan"... "bun butter jam"!!! LOL :)
Yes, the beat does start out like a cross between "Jam" and "Dangerous", but in the end it's a Rahman song. He is the king when it comes to contemporary funky pop-ish songs. Boys is not a musical classic by any means - but it sizzled as far as its genre is concerned. The rest of the MD's "modern" songs are pretenders, compared to Rahman's songs in that category.

It's like this, sila party-galukku pona classical-o,jazz, illa rock-o kekka mudiyadhu.. appo hip-hop, trance idhu dhaan nalla irukkum.. andha situationukku.. not long-lasting but fun nevertheless...

Maami: "cha! yenna, idhuve neenga vera heroine-a pathi sollirundhellna parava illa.. unga rasanaila dharbaya pottu posukka!"

Lol, but this mami is very mild type, maama is very strong personality - rare reversal of mama-mami roles ;-)

Oh you liked the Boys music too - I thought it was scintillating. Good instant fun of a Chaat/fast-food variety. With usual caveats about existence of music God fom Madurai etc.

Dasa folks have plenty of time to listen to this music and improve. I have been listening to this from yesterday - it's quite easy to outdo this, even with a Maanga like Himmesh. But requires heavy KH interference. BTW, has anyone heard Himmesh's BGM in any movie - is he like Harris ?

Also you said something about ARR backing out due to religious fanatics, but 'Sahara' appears to have some 'Hindu' stuff in it.

  • BNB,
    LOL :)

"Dasa folks have plenty of time to listen to this music and improve"
but the songs have been composed long back...

"Also you said something about ARR backing out due to religious fanatics, but 'Sahara' appears to have some 'Hindu' stuff in it"
Like i said, that's why it sounds strange because Rahman has done such songs before. Well, maybe its because its a Kamal film (assuming its true). Mumbai Xpress was English while 7G Rainbow Colony wasn't...

By Blogger Bala (Karthik), at Tue Apr 03, 10:10:00 AM

  • BNB;
I am not sure if he has done any BGM ... bcoz the song is composed by one and BGM is done by other.Going by the number of movies he is composing every year. I am sure he has not done any BGM atleast in the recent times.

  • @BNB,
    LOL

    @bala,
"People" ku car paint use panninaanaam"
